Pictures from MarineLab Trip ... Flamingo and Key Largo.

Kayaking at Silver Springs ... https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/silver-springs

Sunrise at Flamingo ... beautiful again but the mosquitoes were in force.

AP Test on the Horizon!

May 11th is our AP Biology Exam for 2014-2015.  Today we reviewed the 13 Investigations (Labs) we did over the school year.  Afterward this, we counted flies from the crosses we made over a week ago.  We are using the X-linked white eye mutant and autosomal mutants sepia eyes and vestigial wings. Friday is an "A" day so we will complete our Drosophila behavior lab to finish up the week.  We have be reviewing after school.

In Selected Topics in Science, we are about half way through our amphibian dissection.  Tomorrow we will finish the brain dissection and quiz.  We have taken alot of measurements to graph.

Computer Programming I just finished a program in Scratch making a flower using an algorithm.  We gave awards for best in show, most likely to attract a bee, most colorful and more.  This week students are finishing either a pong game or the show (a musical performance).

Computer Programming II has three rotations on projects (arduino, raspberry pi, python graphics, and finch robots).  We are finishing up the last of our Python problems with a dictionary program.  Student team projects will be used for their final later next month ... many teams have opted for the line reading competition using our Zumo robots and arduinos.

Robot Tracing Video ...

Using our arduinos ... we have our Zumo Robot tracing a black line maze.

MarineLab and Spring Break in the Keys ... now back to work!

Some pictures from the Science trip to MarineLab in Key Largo during Spring Break ...  below, kayaking at Silver Springs.

Sunrise at Flemingo in the Everglades ... it was beautiful but the mosquitos were in abundance!

Mr. Byrn getting a close up of an 8' alligator running away from us.  We had been on a hiking trail nearby and it was at the side of the road as we were leaving.  I am reminded of what my sister says, "You don't have to be the fastest to get away ... just not the slowest!"

Students working during a invertebrate survey at MarineLab ... the rock shake lab!

Next two pictures were at the Butterfly House in Key West.  Hundreds of mostly tropical and sub-tropical butterflies raise by butterfly farms.  I am not sure how I feel about that but, they were beautiful.

Whenever we would stop to camp ... everyone had to charge up ... can't do without that cell phone and social media!

Spring break is over and now back to work.  AP Exam on the horizon and we will review after school on Mondays and Thursdays.  Computer Programming I will be finishing Visual BASIC and moving on to Scratch programming.  Computer Programming II will continue their project rotation and wrap up Python.  The Selected Topics class is finishing ecology before starting a unit on organ systems and a dissection.

Six weeks of school remains with lots of interruptions ...

Zumo robot, arudino and line tracing program ... wildflowers!

Today, we continued our station work in Computer Programming II.  Two students got our Zumo robot (with an arduino microcontroller) off the ground and onto the maze (background ... Finch in the background).  This year, we have worked with Finch robots (Snap) and now Zumo robot (using C language).  Students continue to wrap up their study of Python programming.

In AP Biology, we wrapped up our Transpiration Lab with a study of stomata density.  Plant Biology when we return from Spring Break.  Students have a mock exam with FRQ's to complete during break.

Computer Programming I students are finishing Visual BASIC with an animation program.  We will move to SCRATCH programming after Spring Break.

Selected Topics helped weed the wildflower / pollinator bed last class period and we continue on our ecology unit.

Wildflowers starting to bloom ... twinleaf blooming below.
