We finished our Chemistry Unit last week. When studying balancing equations we have our Daniel Boone - Best in Kentucky Gunpowder Championship. Students make a small amount of gunpowder. They are scored on duration of flash (less is more) and size of flash (more is better). Winners always have a balanced reaction equation and good preparation technique. While some of our students made very good fire retardants ... pictured below is Kacy and Brian that made excellent gunpowder with just the right amounts of potassium nitrate, sulfur and charcoal.
